Volunteer Spotlight: Marie Thompson
Always a horse lover, Marie grew up in Minneapolis, MN where as a kid, she would use a tree limb as her imaginary horse. She always dreamed of someday living out west on a horse ranch, so finding MVHR is her “dream come true”.
Marie earned her BS in business from the University of Minnesota and worked at the university for more than 10 years. She purchased her first horse while in high school and later rented a 30-acre hobby farm just north of the city with her sister. In addition to horses, they had geese, dogs, cats and large gardens.
In 1987, Marie and her husband moved to Colorado Springs where they spent 18 years working in nursing homes, a CPA firm and manufacturing firm. They decided to move up to the mountains in 2005 and landed in Eagle County.
Marie was introduced to MVHR by volunteers, Debbie and Sascha, and trainer, Kendra Scott. She has enjoyed working with Kendra, whom she says has taught her a lot. Marie started volunteering in late 2019 saying, “I love to be around the horses and of course, the view is pretty awesome!!” Our Executive Director, Shana, calls her our “die-hard Sunday morning person”. These days that involves lots of chipping away at frozen poop to be scooped, sometimes frozen water tanks and RTVs that are hard to start in the cold. This makes Marie’s dedication to her regular Sunday morning shift even more impressive.
Thank you, Marie, for braving the cold weather and making sure our Rescues have wonderful care and company every Sunday!
