Hay for Horses!
Double the Herd, Double the Cost of Hay!
More Horses Eat More Hay
As you've surely heard by now, MVHR rescued a record number of 28 horses in 2020 - more than double the number of equines than in the previous year! So far in 2021, we continue well on the same pace. To feed our growing herd, MVHR has purchased and resupplied hay earlier in the year than normal. Therefore, our hay purchasing capacity in the coming months will be strained, both in terms of budget...and that all-too-familiar condition in the West: drought.
Sustained Drought and Supply and Demand
Due to sustained drought conditions in Colorado, hay is less available and much more expensive in 2021. Last year, on average, MVHR paid $6-7 per bale to feed our herd, thanks to generous hay donations. This year, with fewer donations, prices have soared to $13-14 per bale - double the cost.
We are tremendously grateful for hay donations and remain on the lookout for generous folks who are able to DONATE HAY!
Goal: Raise $15,000 For Hay
Secure funding for hay is what MVHR needs NOW to avoid pulling from other equine care necessities. Although MVHR anticipated a hay cost increase in 2021, we are calling upon our community's support today to meet DOUBLE THE COST AND DOUBLE THE QUANTITY of this most essential commodity.
