Our Programs: Summer Day Camp – Learning for Kids & Adoption-Ready Training for Horses
All 5 sessions of Summer Day Camp filled up in only 13 days! 60 children, ages 8-14, in groups of 12, enjoyed four days out at the Rescue. They delighted in games, ranch work, mucking, grooming, saddling and riding (and 10 received scholarship aid); all with the underpinning theme of R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
2019 was only the 2nd year of Summer Day Camp at MVHR and what a summer it was! Our High School Rescue Club participants also learned camp counseling skills and supported our 3 summer staff. The corrals were always clean and the camp kids had a chance to learn about equine care and riding. Without scholarship help, 10 of these children would not have been able to learn R.E.S.P.E.C.T. or make new horse and human friends over their 4-day sessions at the Rescue.
R.E.S.P.E.C.T. – that’s Responsibility, Empowerment, Stewardship, Perseverance, Empathy, Cooperation and Trust.
In addition, this year all of the horses that the kids worked with and rode were MVHR Rescues as a result of the 60 Day Challenge! Volunteers worked with trainers Joel and Kendra to train Jackie, Mustang Sally, Ryder, Casey, Roxy and George. Not only did the horses do their jobs with style, they also showed their stuff at Hay Day/Adoption Day in September.
These integrated efforts – funded by you and supported by volunteers – are worthy of a repeat in 2020.
